RESUME TIPS:

A resume is a personal marketing tool which highlights your work experience, skills, and education.  It is the best representation of who you are on paper, and a "resume" is the recommended format (as opposed to a curriculum vitae) when applying for jobs.  When applying for a new position resumes are easier to read, and allow for some creative individuality which helps you separate yourself from the crowd.  There are several formats for resumes including the chronological resume, and the functional resume.  The chronological resume is the most popular and best recommended format when apply for a new position:

A well written chronological resume should have the following components:

  • FULL NAME
  • MAILING ADDRESS (CITY, STATE, ZIP CODE, HOME NUMBER, WORK NUMBER, CELL NUMBER AND E-MAIL ADDRESS)
  • OBJECTIVE (for general resume submissions describe your career goals briefly, when submitting your resume in applying for a specific job opening, tailor your objective to closely match each job description for greater targeting)
  • SKILLS (for general resume submissions, summarize your most important technical skills. If you're applying for a specific technical job, tailor your skills to match those required in the job description for greater targeting. Write a brief summary of your technical skills here and a list of specifics)

           EXPERIENCE

  • JOB TITLE
  • COMPANY NAME, CITY AND STATE
  • FROM DATE TO DATE
  • LIST MAIN JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND/OR MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

           EDUCATION
  • Degree, credit hours or diploma
  • School name, City and State
  • Major/Minor
(If your education is more important than your experience, move this section to just below the skills section; for example, if you're fresh out of school with little career work experience.)

  • ADDITIONAL (this is optional or an extra section for what you think is important to emphasize, for example, special training, military experience and special skills. If this section is more important than another, move it up)

  • REFERENCES (provide on request)

KEEP THE FORMAT SIMPLE AND CLEAN, DO NOT USE TABLES OR OVERDUE THE RESUME WITH TOO MUCH COLOR AND/OR DIFFERENT FONTS

MAKE THE FORMAT EASY TO COPY AND PASTE

CHECK FOR SPELLING AND GRAMMAR

IT IS ALWAYS RECOMMENDED TO HAVE SEVERAL DIFFERENT PEOPLE PROOF YOUR RESUME

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO TAKE CONSTRUCTIVE ADVICE FROM OTHERS

KEEP IN MIND THAT AN EMPLOYER OR RECRUITER WILL GLANCE AT YOUR RESUME FOR LESS THEN 45 SECONDS TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT THERE IS A FIT
